Ernest Shackleton faces a race against time to rescue the stranded crew of the Endurance from the harsh winter of Elephant Island. They tried to kill elephant seals and penguins to survive, but during the winter both were relatively scarce.
And the fierce conditions kept them confined to their shelter for days at a time. When the Yelcho appeared, Frank Wild, whom Shackleton had left in charge, reported phlegmatically, "I felt jolly near blubbing for a bit and could not speak for several minutes.
Some of them would visit Elephant Island again, in , on their way back from the Antarctic on board the Quest. Shackleton had organized that expedition and had set out on it, but by the time his men returned briefly to their former home, he was dead.
He had had a massive heart attack onboard ship. He was just Few humans have set foot on Elephant Island since. In , a British expedition visited the landing sites but found no remaining sign of any occupation: just the penguins and the seals, and the wind and the waves. On August 25, , Shackleton returned to Elephant Island to rescue the remaining crew members.
Astonishingly, not a single member of his men team died during the nearly two years they were stranded. In , Shackleton published South , his detailed account of the journey and its miraculous ending. Shackleton, however, was not through with expeditions. In late he set off on a fourth mission to the South Pole.
His goal was to circumnavigate the Antarctic. But on January 5, , Shackleton suffered a heart attack on his ship and died. He was buried in South Georgia. Reverence for Shackleton's heroism and leadership didn't immediately follow.
But over the last half-century, as his story became the subject of more historical research, the account of the Endurance and how Shackleton averted total disaster has elevated his standing and made him a principal figure of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
