The wildly successful Hunger Games series ended with the release of Mockingjay Part 2 in The impact of the franchise, however, has lasted, and many fans still mourn the loss of some of their favorite characters they watched die onscreen.
Katniss suffered through many losses but ultimately managed to find a happy ending with Peeta and their children. In order to overthrow a violent fascist government, Katniss and her allies had to fight back. Despite her best efforts, Katniss couldn't save everyone she cared about. Here is a list of the 10 saddest deaths in the series. While at first Cato might have been presented as a villain, the moments before his death in The Hunger Games gave more context to the character.
Raised from a young age to fight in order to make his District proud, Cato never knew any other life than that of a hopeful victor. He may have been bloodthirsty and cruel, but he never knew any other way. Katniss seems to realize this in his last moments, shooting him with an arrow as an act of mercy.
Although he may not have had the most screen time, the effect that Castor's death has on his brother is heartbreaking to watch. He immediately established himself as a major player in the games, claiming his territory and fending off the Career pack on his own.
When Katniss went to the Cornucopia to get the medicine that would save Peeta's life, Thresh could have killed her, but spared her life instead, after hearing that Katniss had been allied with Rue. His death occurred offscreen, but still had an effect on Katniss and the audience. Mags was a character that, like Katniss, we couldn't help but like.
She tips Katniss off to the tracker jacker nest that saves Katniss' life. She and Katniss ally and Katniss discovers that Rue has six younger siblings that she's had to care for. Rue knew that she could trust Katniss by the mockingjay pin that she wore, explaining that she loves mockingjays, particularly because of their music.
In District 11, Rue worked in the orchards and would climb high in the trees and, when it was quitting time, she would sing a special song to let the others know that it was time to go home. The mockingjays would carry her song through the orchards. Rue is killed by the boy from District 1, and Katniss is there to sing Rue a final song and decorate her body with flowers. Rue, like Prim, makes Katniss promise that she will win, and there are moments when it is her promise to Rue, more so than her promise to Prim, that gives Katniss the strength she needs to fight on.
