She has spent a good portion of her life taking care of the children and having to take up Gene's absent role on many occasions. Now it's very evident Shannon wants to be taken care of emotionally more than ever, I however doubt that Gene can provide her with a feeling of mental ease and safety.

I have watched their show and thought the family was pretty nice. It seems that Shannon was previously wrapped up in raising the kids and now that they are gone is looking for 'her' and the actions of Gene are now amplified for her now that her attention is not diverted to the kids. I don't condone what he does but if she did not clamp down on him in the last 28 years it's a little late now. Gene, like most men probably does not understand what is going on with her now that the kids are gone and at his age is not apt to change.
Both of them need to do some self examination. It's a set-up. Completely staged!!!!!!! I've read the previews for the third episode and things are fine between them with Shannon planning surprises for Gene as they go away somewhere.

Both shows are very fake with staged scenes, but Ozzy is at least funny and crazy. Gene, on the other hand, is a tad creepy. Maybe too much botox, but he is expressionless. Hard to say if he is serious or not when he says some of the things he says. I'm guessing that the walkoff is a ratings ploy. If she has stuck by home for 28 years likely she will not leave. That is, hitting every media outlet and staging fights to boost viewer ratings. Their "reality" show is SO scripted and predictable.
She's going thru empty nest syndrome. A lot of couples have issues when their kids finally leave to be on their own. Moms don't know what else to do since they've spent all those years being "Mom".
