What is the difference between accessibility and accommodation

The HRLSC is committed to welcoming people with disabilities who are accompanied by a support person. A person with a disability who is accompanied by a support person will be allowed to have that person accompany them on our premises. The HRLSC will, before deciding that a person with a disability ought to be accompanied by a support person, consult with the person with a disability to understand their needs, consider relevant health or safety factors based on the available evidence and determine if there is no other reasonable way to protect the health or safety of the person with a disability or other people on the premises.

In the event of a planned or unexpected disruption to services or facilities for clients, including clients with disabilities, the HRLSC will notify the public promptly. A clearly posted notice will include information about the reason for the disruption, its anticipated length of time, and a description of alternative facilities or services, if available. The notice will be made publicly available on our website at www. Please do not wear perfume, after-shave or any other chemically scented product if you are attending at our office or meeting with HRLSC staff in person.

This training will be provided as soon as practicable following a new employee commencing employment with the HRLSC. HRLSC staff will also be trained on an ongoing basis when changes are made to any policies, practices and procedures about accessibility and accommodation and the provision of HRLSC services.. The HRLSC will incorporate accessibility criteria and features when procuring or acquiring goods, services or facilities. If it is not possible and practical to do so in the circumstances, the HRLSC will provide an explanation upon request.

The HRLSC will notify its employees and the public about the availability of accommodation for applicants with disabilities in its recruitment process. The HRLSC will notify job applicants, when they are individually selected to participate further in an assessment or selection process that accommodations are available upon request in relation to the materials or processes to be used.

When making offers of employment, the HRLSC will notify the successful applicant of its policies for accommodating employees with disabilities, upon request.

This information will be provided to new employees as soon as practicable after commencing employment. Upon the request of an employee with a disability, the HRLSC will consult with the employee to provide, or arrange for the provision of, accessible formats and communication supports for information that is needed to perform the job, and information that is generally available to other employees.

In determining the suitability of an accessible format or communication support, the HRLSC will consult with the employee making the request. The HRLSC will provide this information as soon as practicable after becoming aware of the need for accommodation. Where the employee requires assistance, the HRLSC will, with the consent of the employee, provide the workplace emergency response information to the person designated by the HRLSC to help the employee.

The HRLSC will maintain a written process for the development of documented individual accommodation plans for employees with disabilities. Sometimes, it could even segregate people if not done carefully like Railways have added a so called disabled friendly coach at the rear end of the train to make it accessible. Universal design on the other hand takes into account needs of maximum users including people with disabiltes right from the design stage with equity as the key goal.

Accommodation takes into account the fact that one size does not fit all. It is a must sometimes and as per the law denying reasonable accommodation is discrimination. The following three pictures taken from Facebook explain the three terms quite well. The picture shows three scenarios:. Everyone has the same size box to stand on. The short person cannot view the match at all as the environment is inaccessible. The medium-height person can watch it and also the tall person can watch the match.

In the second frame there is some level of accommodation. This is individualised accommodation where the medium height person gets one box and the short height person gets two boxes to stand on. The UN defines accessibility as:. Although they are similar terms, accommodation and accessibility represent different approaches to creating a world that is inclusive of all people. As the term implies, accommodations are tweaks or adjustments made after the fact.

For example, a restaurant may reprint their menu after several customers mention that the font is too small to read, or cannot be read by someone with colorblindness. If the menu had been designed with accessibility in mind, it would have used appropriate font sizes and colors from the get-go. It can be hard to ask for help even when you need it.

And while some health conditions are more obvious than others, a differently abled person in an inaccessible facility essentially has two options: ask for help or leave. When a person needs an accommodation in their place of employment, they may fear losing their job or being stigmatized if they disclose a health condition. Accommodations are made when a user is unable to access material without additional assistance.

However, this doesn't mean that if a student needs accommodations your course is not accessible. There are cases where a student will need accommodations regardless of the work you've put into your course. This site requires Java Script to function.
